Shine, by Stuart Crouch
This year, we will use SHINE to focus on aspects of (short) story writing
A story of hope
SHINE tells the story of Nathan, an awkward, nerdy boy, who never pushes himself forward and prefers to stay out of the limelight. But Nathan is a good boy, who always watches and listens, and thereby learns. When the school play comes along, Nathan performs a disastrous audition, but his day comes closer to opening night, when he is thrust onto centre stage. He remembers what his teacher, Miss Bouvier, said about some things being worth waiting for, and sings his heart out. He learns that he can look behind and see how far he’d come, and look ahead to all of the excitement that life could offer.
This first story is followed by six more episodes in the life of young Nathan.
